Rising Rhetorical Battle Involving Ethiopian Government and Eritrean Government Sparks Fears of Armed Clash

Increasing concerns have emerged over the potential of military engagement involving Horn of Africa neighbours, the Ethiopian government and Eritrea, as confrontational discourse has intensified in the last month.

What Did Ethiopian Officials Stated?

Landlocked Ethiopia's requests for access to the sea coast through Eritrea has provoked a fierce war of words.

PM Abiy Ahmed previously announced in last year that his government's access to the sea was an existential matter, comments that Eritrea ignored.

Ties between the both governments have often been tense. After a long-standing struggle for freedom, Eritrea, which has a extensive maritime frontage, legally broke away from Ethiopian rule in the early 1990s, making it landlocked.

In 1998, a territorial conflict broke out in which more than 100,000 people were killed.

Current Remarks from Ethiopia's Government

Prime Minister Abiy and army chief General Birhanu Jula have openly claimed ownership of Eritrean southern port of Assab – some 60 km from the border - and hinted at the desire to capture it through military means.

In early September, Abiy said Ethiopia's "error" of losing entry to the sea as a because of Eritrean independence would be "addressed tomorrow".

The Ethiopian envoy to neighboring Kenya, former General Bacha Debele, said that the port was "Ethiopian property" and would be returned "using武力".

Eritrea's Response to the Statements

Amid continuous challenges from Ethiopia, Asmara's position has been restricted to brief comments on X from Information Minister Yemane G..

The minister has dismissed Ethiopian requests for maritime entry describing it as "risky" and a "harmful plan" of "irredentism" – a policy of reclaiming former lands.

Government spokespeople warned on recently that moves to legitimise "flagrant aggression" would have significant repercussions for Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries and is a "limit that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Military Preparations on the Ground

There have been little evidence of significant troop deployments in the border areas between the two countries.

However, in Ethiopia, national TV has broadcast training completions of thousands of cadets at multiple army bases.

The head of staff section of the defense force, the officer, stated recently in an discussion that the defense forces was in a "secure situation" as "tens of thousands of recruits" were joining it, which he said was "a signal to our enemies".

Previous Origins of the Conflict

For more than half a century from 1890, the territory was administered by Italian colonisers.

Following Italy's defeat, it was then managed by the British administration before becoming a integrated region of the Ethiopian empire.

However in 1962 the ruler cancelled this arrangement and the region became completely integrated into the Ethiopian state.

A three-decade long internal conflict followed, finishing with the government's loss in the early 1990s. Independence was then endorsed by the population in a vote in 1993.

Briefly in the 1990s, there were good relations between the authorities in Addis Ababa and Eritrea's capital, but they fell out over the specific demarcation of their common border, causing war in 1998.

Though this concluded in a truce in 2000, it was never fully implemented, and the both countries remained at odds.

This situation improved in 2018, when the Prime Minister made overtures to Eritrea's leader President Isaias. The both leaders endorsed a statement that the war was concluded – a move that gained Abiy the Nobel Peace Prize.

The both administrations were then cooperators in Ethiopia's 2020-2022 civil war in Tigray.

However ties have subsequently deteriorated once more.
